Description from the seller
The rainbow in the cube – fluorite 'lemon' from Morocco with ghosts and iridescence
This specimen, originating from Morocco, is a rarity for its optical purity and internal phenomena: a single crystal of fluorite with a vivid lemon yellow hue, crossed by delicate bluish 'ghosts' and spectacular internal rainbows that light up as the light changes. The combination of a sunny tone, internal zoning, and chromatic play makes this piece extraordinarily striking in display.
The surfaces illustratively show the cubic growth of the species: tiny 'cubes' and growth steps chase each other on the faces, producing sharp reflections and an essential yet spectacular geometry. Inside, rainbow iridescence—rare to observe with such intensity in fluorite—arises from very thin discontinuities (microfractures/slabbing lamellae) that act as interference films, splitting the light into a palette of shifting colors. The internal 'ghosts,' with barely bluish/pinkish veils, record pauses and resumptions of crystal growth under slightly different chemical-physical conditions.
From a mineralogical perspective, the yellow color of fluorite is associated with color centers and lattice defects activated during the crystal's history; the exceptional clarity of this gem allows for a clear reading of both zoning and iridescence, which here represent the most 'cool' and distinctive point of the sample. The ensemble is completed by micro-traces of growth on the faces, which detail the formation dynamics of the cube.
It is not just a beautiful specimen: it is a small natural optical prism, capable of combining crystallographic precision and chromatic wonder in a single, very rare manifestation.
Kire Minerals is proud to present 'The Rainbow in the Cube,' selected and studied by Erik Lombini with the usual passion and expertise. Every detail of this piece testifies to the elegance and strength of Moroccan mineralogy.
