A Byzantine bronze cross pendant titled Very Beautiful Cross Pendant – Five-Dot “Wounds of Christ” Motif, dating to ca. 10th–12th century AD, in Excellent condition and acquired from an auction house in Germany in 2024, previously owned by a private collection since 1998.
Description from the seller
A beautifully preserved Byzantine bronze cross pendant, distinguished by its rare and meaningful five-dot circular motifs engraved on each arm. These concentric circles—five on each axis of the cross—are widely interpreted as symbolic references to the Five Holy Wounds of Christ, making this a powerful devotional object from the medieval Christian world.
The cross features elegantly flared terminals and a solid suspension loop, typical of Byzantine craftsmanship. Its surface shows an attractive dark patina with touches of warm earthen tones, testifying to its centuries-long burial and authenticity.
The concentric dot patterns are deeply carved and remain clearly visible. Their symbolic arrangement would have served as a constant reminder of Christ’s Passion, offering spiritual protection to the wearer. Such pendants were commonly worn by pilgrims, soldiers, and clergy throughout the Byzantine Empire.
Material: Bronze
Date: 10th–12th century A.D.
Culture: Byzantine
Condition: Very good for age. Strong patina, well-defined decoration, intact loop, no repairs.
Dimensions: 60mm
A highly expressive and spiritually meaningful Byzantine pendant, ideal for collectors of early Christian art, devotional objects, or medieval metalwork.
