Description from the seller
Hello everyone and welcome to this fantastic auction!
We are met with one of the most famous and widely circulated silver coins in history made after the empress.
Maria Theresa of Austria ruled from 1740 to 1780. As it often happens, a coin was made in her name. The first edition was minted in 1741 and quickly became a trusted medium of exchange in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
How does this coin look?
The obverse: A portrait of Empress Maria Theresa. She is facing right, wearing a formal gown . Latin inscription “M. THERESIA D. G. R. IMP. HU. BO. REG.” surrounds her, which translates to: “Maria Theresa, by the Grace of God, Empress of the Romans, Queen of Hungary and Bohemia.”
The reverse: A Double-Headed eagle (a classic emblem of the Holy Roman Empire). The crowned eagle with a sword in one hand and a scepter in the other. The Habsburg shield, embellished with heraldic icons of Austria, Hungary, Bohemia, and other Habsburg lands, rests on the eagle's breast.
As for technicalities:
Silver Composition: 83.3% AG (SILVER 0.833)
Supply Analysis
This coin, a 1780 Burgau thaler, was minted during a period characterized by economic and political transformations that influenced coin production. Because of these factors, it is difficult to determine the precise mintage figures; however, given the era and associated technological capabilities, these coins are presumed to be moderately rare, especially in the higher grades. Survival rates suggest that few uncirculated examples exist today.
Demand and Market Value Analysis
Given its age and historical context, the 1780 Burgau thaler attracts considerable interest among numismatists, particularly those specializing in European currencies. Its collectible value increases with better-preserved examples, garnering premiums at auction. This coin represents a valuable piece for collectors of historic European thalers, and its market demand remains consistently strong among enthusiasts of rare 18th-century coins.
