The Nakayama whetstone (commonly known as Maruka), mined from the center of Umegahata (Kato Mine), is truly exceptional. It is regarded as the pinnacle of the Kyoto finishing stones, which themselves are the highest grade of natural sharpening stones.
Mined since the Kamakura period, it served as the official whetstone for successive Emperors and the Shogunate.
As a result of nearly 800 years of mining, the Kato Mine was completely depleted and was closed over 30 years ago. Due to residential development in the surrounding area, large-scale excavation is no longer possible. However, Kyoto mining operators have recently succeeded in extracting new material.
The Nakayama whetstone we are introducing today is one of these newly mined stones.
Please take this unique opportunity to acquire this historical treasure.
