Description from the seller

This Empire clock in fire-gilded bronze depicts a young troubadour playing the lyre, accompanied by a winged Cupid. The case is made of fire-gilded bronze and rests on a pedestal of Verde Antico marble. The enamel dial is signed Chapuy, Rue Vivienne No. 4, a Parisian clockmaker active in the early 19th century.

The refined modeling and musical iconography show a clear affinity with the work of the famous bronze sculptor Claude Galle (1759–1846). A similar model, also signed Galle, was offered at Christie's London (The Connoisseur's Library Sale, February 2023).

On the front, a poetic inscription is engraved.
The troubadour sang in his youth
the gentle song of love
but when adolescence came
He in turn began to foster love.

The clock is in excellent original condition and it is supplied with a pendulum and key.

The photos are part of the description. Our collection can be viewed at the Mora Antiques showroom in Bilzen-Hoeselt, Belgium.
