Edwin John Victor Pasmore (Chelsham, December 3, 1908 – Goudia, January 23, 1998) was an English painter.
Biography
As a young person, he diligently attended the evening courses at the Central School, where Archibald Standish Hartrick was teaching at the time, thanks to whom he was able to develop a broad knowledge of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting. From 1928 to 1935, he focused his interests on Fauvism, Cubism, and Abstract art. In 1934, he exhibited at the Objective Abstractions show alongside William Coldstream, Graham Bell, and Elsie Few.
Founded in 1937, the Euston Road School was inspired by lyrical naturalism, influenced by the paintings of Corot and Bonnard.
Pasmore was also among the first to adopt concrete art after a personal crisis in 1948, when he felt the contradiction between the modern man and the naturalism he embraced. This marked the beginning of a period during which he developed collages with geometrizing structures. From 1951, he was influenced by Naum Gabo and De Stijl, increasingly orienting himself towards concrete art, creating three-dimensional works built with plexiglas and metal tubes.
He is considered one of the most important and significant abstract artists of Great Britain; moreover, in the field of pure geometry, his relief paintings are among the most noteworthy works in Mondrian's lineage.
