Description from the seller
A beautiful Cypriot limestone veiled head of a woman. Probably belonging to a larger sculpture. It shows a female face with very characteristic features such as almond-shaped eyes, a large nose and thick lips, a serene face with a hint of a smile. She wears a hairstyle with a veil that shows her curly-finished hair on front.
With Spanish Import License and French Passport
Condition: Surface wear and material losses at the nose, cheek and chin. Overall good condition ( see pictures ).
Dimensions: 18,00 x 10,00 x 13,00 cm.
Provenance: Alexandre Iolas, (1908-1987), Paris, acquired on the Paris art market in the 1960s/1970s. Gift from the above to the present owner. Acquired at Sotheby's París.
This work is from the collection of Alexander Iolas (1908 - 1987), a renowned Egyptian-born Greek-American art gallery owner and major collector of modern art, who launched the careers of René Magritte, Andy Warhol or Max Ernst among other artists. He established the modern model of the global art business, operating successful galleries in Paris, Geneva, Milan and New York.
