We present three finely crafted containers from the Atoni culture of Western Timor, Indonesia.
Each piece is made from cow bone and decorated with intricate geometric designs, variations of the kaif motif, composed of hooked and diamond-shaped elements traditionally linked to clan identity.
The lids are carved from hardwood and skillfully shaped into the heads of ancestors, reflecting the symbolic role of lineage and protection within Atoni society.
