Description from the seller
Ancient Roman Bronze Libation Bowl
Circa 100-300 AD
This nice bronze libation bowl features thin hemispherical body rising from a slight rounded base, the sides curving gently to a simple rim, the exterior plain and undecorated.
In Roman times, a libation was a ritual offering of liquid, typically wine, poured out to honour gods, spirits of the dead or the Genius of individuals and places. Performed at domestic shrines, in public cult and at banquets, libations accompanied prayers and sacrifice: a portion of the liquid was poured on an altar, hearth or the ground, sometimes from a special shallow bowl (patera), while the remainder might be consumed by participants. Libations were made at the opening and closing of meals, at festivals, during vows and dedications, and in funerary rites.
Dimensions: 15x5cm x 15,5cm x 4cm
Provenance: Private European Collection; formerly acquired from old UK and European collection formed since the 1970s.
