Fine Typed Letter Signed to Miss Emily Boone of the Woman’s Student Goverment Association at Duke University in North Carolina, thanking her for her invitation and saying that “it would be a pleasure to me to give a reading at Duke University, and the fee you mention is quite satisfactory, but I have reluctantly decided that I shall be so busy in Chicago that it would be impossible for me on this visit to go so far afield, and such time as I shall have in the United States, and not established in Chicago, I wish to reserve for my family in Massachusetts. Eliot is considered to be one of the 20th century's greatest poets, as well as a central figure in English-language Modernist poetry. His trials in language, writing style, and verse structure reinvigorated English poetry. He is also noted for his critical essays, which often re-evaluated long-held cultural beliefs. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to a prominent Boston Brahmin family, he moved to England in 1914 at the age of 25 and went on to settle, work, and marry there. He became a British subject in 1927 at the age of 39 and renounced his American citizenship.
