Kachinas or katchinas (sometimes transcribed as Katsina or Katsinam) are spirits in the mythology of
Hopi and Zuni Indians from New Mexico and Arizona, in the southwestern United States.
Spirits of fire, rain, serpent, or even mischievous, playful, benevolent, or malevolent spirits... A kind of inventory of the visible and invisible world. For six months a year, during ritual festivals, these spirits incarnate in masked and costumed dancers. Painted wooden dolls, also called kachinas and representing these dancers, are given to children at the end of the festivals so they can become familiar with the spirit world.
