Iconic original lounge chair and ottoman by Charles & Ray Eames from 1956 in black leather. Models No. 670 and 671. Elegant, modern, and comfortable: thanks to these qualities, the Lounge Chair has become one of Charles and Ray Eames's most famous designs and has achieved classic status in the history of modern furniture.
The demand for new and exciting design was certainly not limited to the United States, and it was clear that Europe could provide a fantastic market for Charles Eames's furniture and that of others. Rather than attempting the costly and lengthy process of establishing a subsidiary, Herman Miller licensed the portfolio of several products (including the Lounge Chair) to a small number of European manufacturers with a high-quality pedigree, including Vitra and ICF. Over the decades, only Vitra has remained, and today it is the only manufacturer of Eames products in Europe and the Middle East.
The shells of the seat and backrest of the chair are made of cherry veneer wood. The seat cushions are filled with goose feathers. The circular silver fasteners for the cushions and the feather padding indicate the first production period, between the late 1970s and the 1980s.
