Description from the seller

Russian icon of Saint Nicholas with an oklad in silver and gilding, stamped – Moscow, 1883

Small portable icon depicting Saint Nicholas the Thaumaturge, blessing with his right hand and holding the open Gospel with his left hand. The painting is executed in tempera on wood, protected by an oklad (gilded repoussé and chased silver cover), with an openwork gold halo.

In the upper corners, the Christ blessing and the Mother of God are depicted, holding the Gospel and the omophorion, in accordance with traditional iconography.

The silver coating bears several clearly legible hallmarks on the lower edge.
• '84': Russian title guaranteeing silver purity of 875/1000, used in the Russian Empire.
• City punch mark: Moscow (Saint George slaying the dragon, visible).
Letter date: 1883.
Master goldsmith's mark: 'A.S.', probably identified with a Moscow goldsmith active at the end of the 19th century.
Controller's punch: placed by the testing workshop, confirming authenticity and silver content.

Refined work, with engraved decor featuring geometric and floral motifs. The gilded openwork nimbus highlights the figure of Saint Nicholas, bestowing a beautiful luminous presence.
