Description from the seller
Impressive carved altar crucifix – Fruitwood (probably walnut or cherry) – Northern Italy, 18th century
Imposing carved and patinated wooden altar crucifix, depicting Christ on the cross with expressive realism.
The body of Christ is finely worked, with a marked treatment of the anatomy and the drapery of the perizonium, characteristic of late Italian Baroque sculpture.
At the foot of the cross, a globe topped with a skull appears, a classic evocation of Mount Golgotha and the memento mori, symbolizing Christ's victory over death and Adam's sin.
Christ is carved from a single block with great intensity of expression, face bowed and eyes half-closed. Notable are some small ancient cracks and signs of wear, consistent with age, as well as visible restorations on the hands and torso.
The moulded wooden base serves as support for the entire piece and confers a beautiful stability to the crucifix.
Total height: 92 cm
Width: approx. 40 cm.
Northern Italy, late 18th century (around 1770-1800)
• Carved, patinated, and partially stained wood (blackened globe)
Condition: Solid and decorative ensemble, with a very beautiful original patina.
