Colorful, pure wool rug over 100 years old from Ayvacik in Canakkale, northwest Turkey. Very high quality. Most likely made as a wedding gift. The central medallion depicts a tree of life; the wish for a long life. Around it are stars, a symbol of good luck. The two colors in the stars represent the yin-yang motif, symbolizing the complementary male and female energies. The four jagged triangles against the inner border in the central field symbolize the dragon: protectors of the sky and gatekeepers. The outer and inner borders depict flowing water.
