In the western regions of the Kongo country, the nganga (ritual specialist priest) who possessed a nkisi sometimes wore a traditional mask.
Nganga and nkisi were similar in that they were both mediators, bearing the same powers.
This African mask was called Ngobudi, which means something frightening, initially referring to a feeling of oppression in the stomach.
This face clearly exhibits features also present on Nkisi-type statues, which the priest used, whose eyes were also inlaid with glass or mirror fragments.
