Untitled first edition etching by Cornelis de Bruyn (published 1698) depicting Smyrna (Izmir) with the fort, the town and Mount Pagos, an uncoloured maritime view from Delft in the Reizen van Cornelis de Bruyn series, full-sheet size 32.5 × 19.6 cm.
Description from the seller
Featured is a maritime view with sailing ships oriented towards the city and harbor of SMYRNA (modern Izmir). Published in the RARE FIRST EDITION of " Reizen van Cornelis de Bruyn...".. Dated: Delft, 1698.
Drawn accurately from nature by the famous Dutch traveler and topographer Cornelis de Bruyn (1652-1726) during his voyage to the Levant.
Only in the first edition of 1698 this print of Smyrna is untitled and of the size of a full sheet, while the later French edition of 1725 has this view titled "Vue de Smyrna et du Port", minimized to a quarter and placed together with additional views on one sheet.
Indicated are the following landmarks: 1 - The Fort of the Turks. 2- The Town. 3-MOUNT PAGOS with the ancient FORTRESS OF KADIFEKALE .
Size of the whole sheet: 32.5cm x 19.6
Strong and fresh paper quality, clear imprint of the etching. Some faint age-toning on upper outer margins. Small re-enforcement with original antique paper on verso of left bottom corner. hardly visible on the front side. A rare view.
