Description from the seller

Stunning triptych of Saint Nicholas icons from Mozhaisk, made of bronze in Russia in the mid-19th century.

The iconography depicts Saint Nicholas of Mozhaisk, recognizable by the sword in his right hand and an image of a city (Mozhaisk) in his left hand. This specific type of image is based on a legend from the 14th century, in which the saint appeared with a sword and a city in his hands to save the inhabitants from a siege by the Mongols. Such icons were often used by travelers or in military contexts, frequently on city gates. The image above the central panel shows Christ and the Mother of God in the upper corners.
