Height: 17-28cm, Width: 11-14cm, Depth: 4-7cm
The light yam root is a staple food in almost all of Oceania. Especially in New Guinea, in the Maprik Hills north of the Sepik River, a pronounced cult has developed among the Abelam and Wosera tribes around these yam roots: the goal is to harvest as large roots as possible. The largest yam roots are awarded in competitions. During religious thanksgiving festivals, the larger yams from the last harvest are decorated with woven masks called 'Baba mini'. Additionally, the roots are adorned with jewelry and painted. In this ceremonial attire, the roots are ritually and temporarily transformed in the minds of the Abelam and Wosera into benevolent ancestors or spirits.
