Background information about the SIGNED photo book 'In India' by Mitch Epstein.

About the American photographer Mitch Epstein (*1952 in Holyoke, Massachusetts)

Mitch Epstein is regarded as one of the best American photographers. He studied art at the Williston Academy in Massachusetts, as well as in the early 1970s at Union College in Schenectady, New York, and at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island. Garry Winogrand was his teacher at the Cooper Union in New York City. In the mid-1970s, he traveled across the United States and explored life there in all its facets. He mostly worked in black and white, but occasionally also with color films. In 1978, he went to India and worked there as a producer and set designer for several films. From 1992 to 1995, he worked in Vietnam before turning back to Holyoke, Massachusetts, after a photographic project about New York. The production of energy in the USA was his main focus from 1994 to 1999. Most recently, he revisited his works created in India.
Among the awards the American photographer has received to date are the Prix Pictet, the Berlin Prize, and a Guggenheim Fellowship for 'Family Business' (2002); he was recently inducted into the National Academy of Design. His works are part of the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the Modern Tate.
Mitch Epstein has published more than a dozen photo books to date, with over 50% of his titles now out of print.

Content

The photo book 'In India' features a selection of color photographs taken by Mitch Epstein during his stay and work in India between 1978 and 1989. He wrote about it: 'It is impossible to summarize my experiences in India in one or two sentences, but I can say that my life there bestowed upon me a humility that I, as a white middle-class man born in post-war America, had not learned.'
During the forced silence of the pandemic, he reviewed his contact sheets again and thus created this comprehensive, personal interpretation of his India work – an interpretation that had not been possible for him until then. Two-thirds of these photographs have never been exhibited or published.

Steidl Verlag, Göttingen 2021 First and only edition.

Hardcover without dust jacket (as issued). 320 x 297 mm. 144 pages with 64 color photographs.
