Agni
Côte d'Ivoire
Wood, polychromy
23 x 4.5 x 4.5 cm / Total height on a 25 cm base.
Lovely statuette of the Agni ethnicity, depicting a woman.
Representation of a woman with a necklace around her neck, dressed in a skirt.
Statuette with very beautiful volumes, revealing a serene and confident expression.
The patina attests to its age.
The piece is fixed on the wooden base visible in the photos.
Painted figurines cover a wide range of domains in Africa. Generally dedicated to ancestor worship, fertility spirits, or divination, they can be found on altars, canoes, inside homes, or carried on oneself, among peoples as diverse as the Yoruba, Fanti, Akan, Ewe, and others.
They appeared with colonization, hence their name. Contrary to what some sources say, they are not meant to ridicule 'the white man.' By appropriating the power of the colon, presented with an accessory of European origin, they fully participate in animist worship. The colon continues to be born, in certain ethnic groups, and to appear according to the rites, customs, and traditions of ancestral Africa.
To fall in love with these figurines with amusing physiques and silhouettes, you don't need to be an expert in African cultural studies or to love traditional art. This is one of the unique aspects of this expression of 'Art Colon.' The touching and endearing side, the laughter, awakens the child sleeping within each of us.
Reflections statuettes, hinged statuettes, they express an entire segment of history, and even for those who know how to dream a little, an entire segment of the future.
