Gibellina is a small town in Sicily that was destroyed by a terrible earthquake in 1968. The town was rebuilt about ten kilometers away. Many artists responded to the mayor's call to create numerous works of art on the old site of the village, particularly Joseph Beuys and Alberto Burri, who created the 'Cretto,' which covers the ruins of the old village with a layer of concrete while preserving the street and alley lines through which one can pass.
Mimmo Jodice, born in 1934 in Naples, is one of the most important Italian photographers, and here he followed the path of Joseph Beuys. Guido Guidi, born in 1941, photographs the village ruins here, while Giovanni Chiaramonte (1948–2023) photographs both the ruins of the village and the artworks in progress. This project also benefited from the collaboration of Rosella Bigi.
