Set of 6 Ghanaian trade bead necklaces with a mould for beads, originating from Ghana and dating to the late 20th century, incorporating glass, raffia, wood and terracotta, provenance Galeriehouder / Antiekhandelaar.
Description from the seller
Set of five old trade bead necklaces from Ghana with an original mold used to make the trade beads.
Trade beads necklaces are a traditional form of jewelry that originate from the long history of trade and craftsmanship in West Africa, particularly in Ghana. These necklaces are often strung with colorful beads made from glass powder (broken and ground glass that is melted again). Included with this set is a mold originally used to produce glass beads. The molten glass powder was poured into the mold, after which small rods were inserted upright to create the holes. Once it hardened, they were knocked out of the mold.
Trade beads were originally produced in Europe, particularly in countries like Venice and the Netherlands. They were used as a medium of exchange for goods such as gold and ivory. In African societies, necklaces made of trade beads were not only used as jewelry; they also held symbolic and social meanings, such as marking status, wealth, or identity.
Ghanaian trade beads necklaces can have various designs and patterns, depending on the region, the community, and the maker's taste. Some necklaces are simple in design, while others feature more elaborate and intricate patterns.
Dimensions (single length and average size bead) from left to right:
- 33 cm by 1.2 x 0.8 cm
40 cm by 1.2 x 0.75 cm
42 cm and 0.6 x 0.8 cm
45 cm and 0.8 x 0.7 cm
- 43.5 cm in 1.2 x 1.4 cm
Origin: these trade bead necklaces come from the collection of Fofana Sankoung, a dealer in African art since the 1960s, operating between West Africa and European art capitals such as Amsterdam and Antwerp.
