Three-seat Maralunga sofa by Vico Magistretti for Cassina, in brown leather (Pelle), Italy, dating from 1990–2000, in good used condition with small signs of age and stains; measures 230 cm W x 95 cm D x 72 cm H.
Description from the seller
The Maralunga three-seater by Vico Magistretti for Cassina is not just a simple sofa but an architecture of relaxation, born in 1973 from a creative quarrel. Cesare Cassina, exasperated, breaks the backrest of a prototype; Magistretti smiles and sees the revolution. From that gesture, the bicycle chain mechanism (patented) was born, hidden in the heart of the padding, allowing you to raise or lower each headrest with a single finger.
A click and the sofa transforms: from formal living room to deep nest, from conversation to horizontal reading. The leather is Extra color Tabacco, hand-stitched, as soft as a glove and as durable as an English saddle.
The structure?
Powder-coated steel tubes, matte black ABS bases, with suspensions featuring 70 mm elastic straps: a motorcycle frame beneath a cloud pillow. Inside: Bayfit foam with differentiated density, layers of Dacron, and virgin polyester padding. The result? You sit down and the body disappears, the spine thanks you, and time slows down. Generous dimensions: 94 inches in length, 35 inches in depth, backrest height adjustable from 27.5 to 40.5 inches (low/high), seat height 17.7 inches from the floor, perfect for crossed or extended legs.
The cushions are removable, the leather can be cleaned with a damp cloth, and the inner cover is washable. You can add the coordinated pouf to create an endless chaise lounge. The Compasso d’Oro 1979 winner, present at MoMA, photographed in a thousand homes from Milan to Malibu. Yet, it remains humble: it doesn’t shout, it whispers. It’s the sofa you never tire of looking at, and after twenty years, it still looks like it just left the Carate Brianza workshop. A piece of history that costs as much as a vacation but accompanies three generations. If you buy it today, your grandchildren will fight over inheriting it. Maralunga is not just furniture. It’s a gesture by Vico Magistretti that says: ‘Sit down, breathe, the world can wait.’ And you wait, sinking into that warm brown, with the chain softly clicking and the leather smelling of home.
