Description from the seller

Antique Russian icon 'St. Nicholas of Myra' from the 19th century (circa 1880). Hand-painted with egg tempera paints on a wood panel with a chalk ground.

Typical method of icon creation in 18th and 19th century Imperial Russia. The motif is widespread and very popular in the Orthodox Church.

This is an Old Believer icon. The painting is quite masterfully executed and detailed. The color contrasts and shading are perfectly coordinated. The painting contains very authentic craquelure (see photos).

Partial restorations are present (see photos). The face of the saint is particularly expressive and striking (see photos). The saint is labeled. The inscriptions are clearly legible.

The icon was created around 1850-1880 in Southern Russia. The painting style and color scheme clearly indicate a Southern Russian work.

At the top and bottom, forehead brackets are attached. Stable and solid wooden plaque. The icon is in good condition with typical age-related signs of wear (see photos).

An icon for collectors and connoisseurs of the material.

All details are clearly visible in the photos. Photos are part of the description.

Dimensions: 35x30.5x2.2 cm
