Description from the seller
Bowl with Trinitas decor in cobalt blue, Pottery Sint-Paulus Abbey, Oosterhout
Netherlands, circa 1955–1965.
Stoneware, reduction-fired, with engobe and cobalt blue decoration.
With a light outwardly flaring wall. The exterior is finished with a warm brown iron glaze, and the interior with a cream-colored glaze featuring subtle flame reactions in ochre and brown. In the center, there is a painted circular motif in cobalt blue, composed of three rounded leaf shapes in a calm, closed composition, referencing the trinitas motif that was more frequently used within the abbey during this period. Along the edge, a narrow double band in blue.
The form is kept precise and restrained, characteristic of the monastic approach where functionality and simplicity merge. The glazing construction and flame work are typical of reduction firing in the 1950s and 1960s.
The pottery of the Sint-Paulus Abbey developed over the course of the twentieth century as part of the monastic labor pattern, in which craftsmanship was seen as a form of concentrated, attentive practice. The production of stoneware gained a stronger impetus when Father Jan Rahder, after a period at the pottery of the French Abbey Notre Dame de Fontgombault, returned to Oosterhout with knowledge of reduction firing, ash glazes, and harmonious form. Although the later professionalization around 1970 led to a larger and more systematic production, pieces from the earlier middle period, such as this bowl, reflect the original monastic aesthetic in which silence, simplicity, and carefully chosen proportions are central.
Condition: good, with minor signs of use and small marks typical of the technique.
Origin: private collection, the Netherlands.
