The Royal Dutch Airlines N.V. (KLM uses the English name: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines) is the national airline of the Netherlands. The hub of KLM is Schiphol Airport near Amsterdam. The headquarters are located in Amstelveen. KLM operates worldwide and forms the core of the KLM Group, which also includes KLM Cityhopper, Martinair, and Transavia. In 2004, KLM merged with Air France to form the holding company Air France-KLM. Under this holding, both KLM and Air France operate as network carriers. KLM derives its revenue from three core activities: passenger transportation, cargo transport, and aircraft maintenance.
On October 7, 1919, the 'Royal Air Line Company for the Netherlands and Colonies' was established by deed at the notary office of Mr. H. Stoop in The Hague. The start-up capital of 1.2 million guilders was contributed by eight businessmen, including Frits Fentener van Vlissingen and Anton Kröller. Lieutenant-pilot Albert Plesman became administrator and later director. Queen Wilhelmina granted the title 'Royal' to KLM in formation on September 12, 1919. The first KLM office was opened on October 21, 1919, on Herengracht in The Hague. This makes KLM the oldest airline operating under its original name.

The first commercial flight of KLM was operated on May 17, 1920, from London to Amsterdam. On that day, the aircraft rented by KLM, the De Havilland DH.16 G-EALU (also known as DH 9A), flown by the English pilot H. 'Jerry' Shaw, landed at Schiphol. In the following years, the fleet grew with its own aircraft, mostly Fokker models, and flights were extended to increasingly more European destinations.

KLM flew for the first time to Batavia on October 1, 1924, in the then Dutch East Indies, the present-day Jakarta in Indonesia. It was the longest route flight before World War II. During this period, KLM grew to become the third airline in the world, after Pan American Airways and Imperial Airways.

In 1945, after the Second World War, KLM resumed its scheduled services and in 1946 became the first European airline to operate scheduled flights to the United States. The route to the Indies was also restored, and flights were operated with aircraft such as the Dakota and Lockheed Constellation.

In 1960, the first jet aircraft was added to the fleet, the Douglas DC-8, later followed by the smaller Douglas DC-9 for European air traffic.

In 1971, KLM introduced the Boeing 747 (still with the short upper deck furnished as a bar), and in 1972, the DC-10, marking the beginning of KLM's widebody fleet. The network was continuously expanded and eventually included non-stop destinations on all continents. Despite the small domestic market, KLM grew to become the fourth-largest airline in Europe.

For domestic air traffic, NLM Cityhopper was established in 1966, and from the mid-1970s, it also operated regional flights in Europe. Since 1991, after a merger with Netherlines, this subsidiary has been flying under the name KLM Cityhopper. KLM has also become increasingly dominant in the Dutch aviation sector, with stakes in Transavia and Martinair, which have been fully owned subsidiaries since 2003 and 2008, respectively.

Partnerships with other airlines became increasingly important. Since 1993, all flights between the US and Europe have been operated as a joint venture with Northwest Airlines (which merged into Delta Air Lines). During the 1990s, discussions were also held with other European airlines, including British Airways and Alitalia, about extensive cooperation and even a merger. This ultimately resulted in the merger of KLM with Air France on May 5, 2004, forming Air France-KLM. Through this merger, the company was also incorporated into the SkyTeam airline alliance. On February 27, 2019, the Dutch government owned 5.92% of KLM's shares.
