Scream: Youth on the Backstreets
Kannon Noguchi, Qwacci
Liberty Bell/1980/Japanese/210*298*10
The 1980 photo book “Screams: Youth on the Back Streets” featuring motorcycle gangs. Fukuda Fumio's “69 Shinjuku Kaminari-zoku: Where Are They Now...,” which followed the biker gang “Shinjuku Kaminari-zoku” in 1969, and the photo book “Can You Stop Us? The Motorcycle Gangs,” edited by writer and reporter Toi Jūgatsu, and the “Bōsō (Zoku) Series” published by the now-defunct Tairiku Shobo in the early 1980s. The ‘bōsōzoku’ genre is popular not only domestically but also overseas. This book features photographs taken by two photographers, Kanon Noguchi and Qwacci. While details such as the shooting period remain unclear, it also includes young members of the Black Emperor, known for their appearance in the documentary film "God Speed You! BLACK EMPEROR" (1976). The portraits of multiple individuals interspersed among the photos of street racing and gatherings are simply stylish, and the effective use of elements like headlights and metal grilles demonstrates the photographers' skill throughout the book.
