The Lettera 35 was designed in 1972 by Mario Bellini. Like the Olivetti Dora, the Olivetti Valentine, and the Olivetti Lettera DL, it mechanically copies the Lettera 32, which was released in 1963 and designed by Marcello Nizzoli.
The Italian version of the machine uses the QZERTY layout, although versions with different key arrangements were produced depending on the target language. The alphanumeric keys number 43, totaling 86 characters.
