Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile, known as the Reyes Católicos or Catholic Monarchs, united Spain through their marriage in 1469, laying the foundation for a powerful Spanish Empire. Their reign marked a turning point: they completed the Reconquista by capturing Granada in 1492, ending 800 years of Muslim rule in Iberia. That same year, they funded Christopher Columbus's voyage, igniting the Age of Exploration and Spain's global expansion.
Both devout and determined, they reformed the Spanish church and established the Spanish Inquisition to enforce religious unity. Though controversial, their reign centralized power and transformed Spain into a leading European force.
Isabella was a savvy political strategist. She outmanoeuvred rivals to seize the throne of Castile, and even insisted on reviewing Columbus’s proposal herself before backing it. Together, Ferdinand and Isabella were a formidable duo who reshaped history.
