Roman female hairstyles varied over time, but they were often elaborate and carefully styled to display wealth, status, and fashion sense.
Roman women often styled their hair in waves, braids, and buns, ranging from simple knots in the Republican era to elaborate Imperial fashions with layered curls. Hairstyles were secured with acus crinalis (hairpins) made of bone, bronze, silver, or gold, sometimes topped with carved or jewelled finials. Beyond function, hairpins reflected wealth, status, and personal taste, making them both practical tools and decorative ornaments.
