Desk clock ATO, Art Deco, marble and onyx, 1930s - France
Impressive French Art Déco-style desk clock by the electric watch manufacturer ATO from Besançon, France. The Art Déco style is characterized by its elegance, geometric shapes, and high-quality materials. It features a very distinctive architectural shape, with angular lines and a design reminiscent of a small Egyptian-inspired monument. The base is rectangular and rises with two tall, triangular side panels, creating a frame for the clock face.
It is mainly composed of two stones: Brazilian emerald onyx and Belgian black marble, a spectacular combination of colors. The black marble provides a solid and elegant appearance, while the emerald onyx offers a contrast of color and depth thanks to its veining. The sphere is metallic, square-shaped, with the characteristic silver spider web pattern of ATO and large numbers also in the Art Deco style.
It is manufactured by the brand ATO, known for its high-quality electric watches from the Art Deco period. It is one of the first battery-powered watches. This adds historical and collector's value to the watch, which combines luxurious materials and a geometric design to create a piece that is both functional and decorative.
Reviewed by a professional watchmaker, the movement has been replaced with a new one. It is a modern battery-powered movement. The original hands have been assembled onto the new movement. The original movement is provided for the buyer to keep.
Léon Hatot (1883-1953) and ATO
Léon Hatot studied at the National School of Watchmaking in Besançon between 1895 and 1898, where he established his first watchmaking workshop. In 1920, he founded the public limited company Etablissements Léon Hatot, headquartered in Paris. By around 1930, he employed more than 50 workers. ATO was the first known watch manufacturer to experiment with unusual materials and operating methods. Léon Hatot was particularly interested in the technical aspects of his profession, especially the possibilities offered by electrical energy. It was then that he founded a subsidiary dedicated solely to research and developed battery-powered electric watches. Thanks to collaboration with Marius Lavet (1894-1980), an engineer from the Higher School of Electricity, they began manufacturing the first electric watches in 1923. These were marketed under the ATO brand with great success. Today, ATO is part of the Swiss Swatch Group.
