Description from the seller
Tabletop refracting telescope, wood and leather, 20th century – France
Elegant early 20th-century French tabletop refractor telescope. It features a circular, turned wooden base or stand and a shaft supporting the main piece, also secured by two leather straps. The optical tube is cylindrical, made of wood and leather, with polished brass fittings on the sections of the eyepiece (the magnifying lens that directs the image directly to the eye) and the objective lens (the lens through which light enters).
Between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a major change occurred in astronomy due to the rise of large glass reflectors and advances in optics. High-precision, large-sized reflectors were manufactured, designed for high-quality photographic captures. During this period, astronomy benefited from technological advancements such as electronic CCD detectors, which improved telescope sensitivity. Larger mirrors were also produced, allowing for increased aperture of the reflectors and enhancing their durability and preservation. The use of telescopes expanded both in professional research and educational fields, laying the foundations of contemporary astronomy.
Currently, it is a highly valued collectible item. Perfect as a gift or as a decorative element for a classic and elegant office, living room, or wine cellar.
