Bacchus is the Roman god of wine, fertility, ecstasy, and the arts, the Roman counterpart to the Greek god Dionysus, known for his wild parties (Bacchanalia), accompanied by satyrs and maenads, and the son of Jupiter and a mortal woman (Semele). He is the god of intoxication and drunkenness, but also brought civilization and inspiration to theatrical arts, and was often depicted with grapevines and a staff.
