About the Berlin photographer Michael SCHMIDT (1945-2014)
The Berlin photographer Michael SCHMIDT had his first solo exhibition in 1973. During his teaching activities at two adult education centers, he organized workshops, lectures, and exhibitions including those by Robert ADAMS, Diane ARBUS, Lewis BALTZ, Larry CLARK, John GOSSAGE, William EGGLESTON, Larry FINK, Frank GOHLKE, and Lisette MODEL. Alongside Bernd and Hilla BECHER, he was thus responsible for opening West German photography towards the 'New Topographics' movement from the USA. To date, around two dozen photo books featuring his work have been published.
The large-format photo book 'Food' by Michael SCHMIDT, consisting of black-and-white and color photographs, was published alongside the exhibition at Museum Morsbroich, Leverkusen. 'Food' is the last volume that Michael SCHMIDT has overseen until its completion.
The series 'Lebensmiitel' was awarded the Prix Pictet. Three days after the announcement by Honorary President Kofi Annan, Michael Schmidt passed away at the age of 68. The photo book 'Lebensmittel' was offered as a library edition without a slipcase. The edition with the slipcase was intended for retail. It is said that the book is particularly rare because parts of the print run, especially the signed copies, were destroyed in a warehouse fire.
Content
From 2006 to 2010, Michael Schmidt traveled across Europe and documented the production, processing, packaging, and presentation of food.
The publication 'Food' contains 174 images from everyday life in the agriculture and food industry, which is not only a significant economic sector but also indirectly reflects the political and social self-understanding of the population. Field workers, breeding farms, fish farms, large bakeries, packaged sausage products, and landscapes used by the food industry – it is a realm in between that is illuminated through a painfully realistic perspective. Just as anonymous as most food produced and processed in Europe is, so indistinct are the places where Michael SCHMIDT took his photographs.
Michael SCHMIDT refrains from local references and instead emphasizes the universal. The extensive loss of local context makes it impossible for the viewer to determine whether, for example, a slaughterhouse is located in Spain, France, or England, or whether an apple washing plant is in Germany or Italy. The conditions visible in the images convey a threatening sense of omnipresence and proximity. However, the motifs are not intrusive; rather, they are designed to unfold their effect with a certain delay: clear and modeled.
Snoeck Verlag, Cologne 2012. First and only edition.
