Description from the seller
Brass fireplace set in pure Art Nouveau style. William Tonks & Sons. Birmingham. Ca. 1898–1905
Description
A fireplace tool set that immediately captures attention through its shape. Art Nouveau in its most recognizable language. Organic lines. Asymmetry. Flowing movement from handle to leaf. The scoop bears a clear whip stroke. The tongs follow the same line.
This is not a standard vintage fireplace set.
The details point towards William Tonks & Sons. The stamp RD 369339 is associated with a registered design from Great Britain around 1900. Birmingham was at that time the center of decorative brass. The line pattern matches exactly with this workshop.
The brass has a calm patina. The curves remain soft. The tongs show signs of use that match their age. The whole functions as both a practical object and a sculpture. The set remains lightweight. Elegant. Characteristic of early Art Nouveau.
