Christian terracotta oil lamp in late Roman/proto‑Byzantine culture, titled Lampe à huile Chrétienne, dating to the 5th–7th century AD, dimensions 126 × 81 × 53 mm, in superb condition from a private collection and acquired in 2024.
Description from the seller
Beautiful Christian oil lamp with a full handle made of orange-patinated terracotta, featuring an open channel and a central medallion equipped with two filling holes.
A curved medallion decorated with two nested squares offset by 45 degrees, with a beaded circular band at the center. The medallion is surrounded by a flat band decorated with a series of various floral motifs.
Presence of whitish deposits.
- Late Roman period.
- Dimension: 126 x 81 x 53 mm
Dating: 5th - 7th century A.D.
- Provenance: Monsieur D.'s private collection.
- Approaching Literature: - Antique Lamps through the Ages "the corpus", Hervé Dejean, plate 121, Fig. L840 (central motif) and M067 (general shape).
- Condition: superb condition, intact!!
