There is no certain dating of the use of skis: some fossil finds in Siberia, Scandinavia, and Lapland date the first tools of this type to around 2500 BC; in particular, a pair of them in excellent condition and dating back to that period have been found in a peat bog in Hoting, Sweden.

About 2,000 years ago, the Lapps wore a long, thin ski, almost like the one we have today, on their right foot, while on their left they wore a shorter one with a sealskin underneath, used for support and propulsion. This particular means of transport was still in use in Lapland until the early 20th century.
