Pre-Columbian Moche culture.
Northern coastal desert area.

Figural vessel having a stirrup type spout, depicting Ai-Apaec lying on a mountain top.

Ai Apaec or “wrinkled face” is a snake-belted figure and god of the mountains.
He is a mythical character identified in Moche iconography, and probably the main Moche deity.

Time period: ca. 400 - 600 AD
Moche style period IV

Dimensions: 20 cm high

Repaired with damage at the bottom, but stable condition.

Provenance: US auctionhouse Arte Primitivo
Ex. Howard Nowes Gallery 2003
Former private New York collection 1960’s
