Description from the seller
1: 9g 1830 France
Front: Louis Philippe I (1830–1848) ruled during the liberal July monarchy. Many commemorative medals were created in his time; this one probably refers to an important public work. 'ROI DES FRANÇAIS' emphasizes his title.
Back: Tribute to Ferdinand Philip, Duke of Orléans. The year 1842 places the medal in the middle of his father's reign. The signature 'Barre' refers to the medallist.
2: 8g 1810 France
Front: During the Napoleonic era, medals were widely used as propaganda. Jean-Charles-Nicolas Galle was a leading medalist with a classical style.
Back: Commemorates the marriage of Napoleon and Marie-Louise (April 1, 1810), an important political alliance. Typical Napoleonic propaganda featuring portraits and allegories.
3: 14g 1871 France
Front: Marianne stands as a symbol for the Third Republic; the motto 'VIRTUTE ET PACE' emphasizes republican ideals.
Back: Commemorates the suppression of the Paris Commune (May 1871). The inscription refers to the victory over the Communards and the 'petrolists'.
4: 21g 1817 France
Front: Commemorates the reinstallation of the statue of Hendrik IV under Louis XVIII. Gayrard designed the medal.
Back side: Emphasizes that citizens restored the image at their own expense—a gesture of loyalty during the Restoration period.
5: 16g 1840 France
Writing of the avoués, lawyers at higher courts. Lady Justice symbolizes the law.
The inscriptions refer to their task and to the Parisian professional group. 'Tiolier F' is the signature of engraver Pierre-Joseph Tiolier.
6: 9g 19th century France
In 19th-century France, especially around the Napoleonic period, many medals were struck in honor of battles and leaders. They served as propaganda, remembrance, or distinctions and are recognizable by their typical style and material.
