Double-terminated block of black tourmaline on mica schist, from Brazil.
The name derives from the Sinhalese 'turmali,' which literally means 'mixed bundle,' referring to stones of various colors. In the past, it also referred to the name of the crystals brought to Europe from Ceylon.
Its color depends on the chemical composition and may not be uniform throughout the crystal.
The micaschist is a metamorphic rock formed by regional metamorphism of medium degree.
It is predominantly a medium- to coarse-grained rock with a markedly schistose texture, sometimes flat, but more often wavy and irregular due to the presence of quartz. The color ranges from silvery gray to brown, depending on the amount of biotite mica present.
