The 'Gazette des Architectes et du Bâtiment' was a bi-monthly magazine published under the direction of E. Viollet-le-Duc fils and A. de Baudot, architects. Issue 4, of the year 1866, was published in Paris by A. Morel, publisher at Rue Bonaparte, 13, opposite the École des Beaux-Arts.
Eugène Viollet-le-Duc was known for his emphasis on the correspondence between the structure and appearance of a building, drawing inspiration from Gothic architecture and organic structures. Anatole de Baudot, a student of Viollet-le-Duc, promoted the use of modern materials such as reinforced concrete in architecture.
Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc (Paris, January 27, 1814 – Lausanne, September 17, 1879) was a French architect and restorer, best known for his restorations of medieval buildings, particularly that of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. He was a central figure both in neo-Gothic architecture in France and in the public debate on 'authenticity' in architecture, which ultimately transcended all revivals, permeating the emerging spirit of Modernism.
