Description from the seller

Egyptian funerary masks made of stucco and fabric from the Ptolemaic period usually had a gilded face, including the nose, to symbolize the divine status of the deceased, identifying them with the sun god. These masks were made from layers of linen or papyrus glued together, covered with plaster, and painted. They served to protect the mummified head, present an idealized image for the journey to the afterlife, and help the soul recognize the body.

Provenance: Ex private UK collection. Collected between 1960-1970; Jaspers' Antiques, 2022; Former Pablo H. Goizauskas Collection, Spain, 2025
