Superb antique surveying instrument / surveyor's square in solid brass, dating from the late 19th century or very early 20th century (around 1880–1900).
This surveying instrument was used by surveyors and engineers to mark or verify right angles in the field, before the widespread adoption of modern optical theodolites.

The cylindrical body features several aiming slots at 90° and a graduated circular scale engraved at its base.
The upper part is pivoting, allowing precise adjustment of the aiming direction.
Entirely made of solid brass, the instrument displays a beautiful patina of age, reflecting its age and quality of craftsmanship.
