Red pottery oil lamp. Byzantine Empire. 5th century AD.

An oil lamp is used to produce light continuously using an oil-based fuel source. The use of oil lamps began thousands of years ago and continues to this day.

Red pottery oil lamp with geometric decoration in its discus and shoulders. It has one pouring hole and one wick hole in its nozzle. A solid spikelike handle flattened on sides sits at the top of the lamp. A raised ridge encircles the discus and extends outwards around the nozzle hole, forming a broad channel on the rounded spout.
Provenance: Purchased by the current owner to a Spanish private collector (P. T.; 1980s).
