Material: Bronze / copper alloy
Dimensions: 49 x 22 mm
Date: 10th – 11th century AD
Condition: Complete and intact with suspension mount, chains, and both feet preserved. Corrosion and patina consistent with age.
A cast bronze amulet consisting of a ribbed suspension mount from which two articulated elements hang, each ending in a flat triangular pendant in the form of stylised duck’s feet.
Duck’s foot amulets are a characteristic type of personal ornament from the Viking Age. Their exact meaning is still debated, but they are believed to have served as protective talismans, associated with fertility, seafaring luck, and the apotropaic power of birds. The dynamic movement of the pendants when worn amplified their symbolic and magical significance.
