Specimen: Epitonium Scalare, a collection shell from Japan, in good condition, 2020, weight 6 g, described as a conchiglia da Collezione dal Giappone.
Description from the seller
The Epitonium Scalare, commonly known as the 'Ladder Shell,' is a marine gastropod mollusk belonging to the family Epitoniidae. This specimen is famous for its extraordinary spiral structure, characterized by prominent, spaced axial ribs that give the shell a 'ladder-like' appearance, making it a fascinating shell.
Shape: elongated, with an elegant and regular spiral.
Axial costae: The lamellae are separated by wide spaces and give the shell its unmistakable scale-like aesthetic.
Color: Pearl white or slightly translucent, with a smooth surface between the lamellae.
Size: Usually between 5 and 10 cm in length, although some specimens may exceed these measurements.
Distribution and Habitat
Epitonium scalare is predominantly found in the waters of the western Pacific, with frequent sightings along the coasts of Japan. It lives on sandy or muddy bottoms, often near colonies of sea anemones, which it feeds on.
It is considered a collectible shell, which in the past was exchanged as a luxury item in European courts.
Due to its fragility and rarity, the collection of Epitonium scalare is regulated in some areas to prevent the depletion of populations.
Epitonium scalare is a masterpiece of nature, a shell with a unique architecture that has a sculptural appearance.
