Description from the seller
MAGNA GRAECIA. Antefix in the form of a female head (4th–3rd centuries BC). Terracotta. Height 15 cm.
Antefixes in Magna Graecia were decorative terracotta elements placed along the edges of temple roofs. Often depicting female heads, gorgons, or mythological figures, they served both to protect the roof’s wooden beams and to display the region’s refined artistic style. Their detailed craftsmanship reflects the strong Greek cultural influence in southern Italy during the Classical and Hellenistic periods.
Provenance: Former private collection (Lutz Voigt; Frankfurt, 1980). Former private collection (Annette Thiel; Berlin, 1989).
