Handcrafted tin Art Nouveau lid box, circa 1900–1910, France, signed by A.E. Chanal (Alice Holbach & Eugène Chanal).
Description from the seller
A.E. Chanal (Alice Holbach & Eugène Chanal)
Rare handcrafted Art Nouveau box, circa 1905–1915
France
Pewter (tin alloy), forged and hammered; hand-engraved signature on the lid and stamped atelier mark on the bottom (A.E. CHANAL).
Sculpturally shaped box with organic rib and vault forms typical of the early Art Nouveau production of the workshop. The plastically constructed lid, with decorative hammering and asymmetrical leaf relief, showcases the characteristic craftsmanship of Chanal: no casting molds, but fully hand-forged with visible blows as part of the final appearance. The combination of engraved signature and punched hallmark indicates small-scale production, typical before the shift to sleeker forms around 1920.
Condition
In authentic condition, with light oxidation and signs of use appropriate for early 20th-century hand-forged pewter.
Biography – Atelier A.E. Chanal
A.E. Chanal was the Parisian studio of Alice Holbach (1872–1951) and Eugène Louis Chanal (1872–1925). The couple produced high-quality, hand-forged objects in tin and copper from around 1900, featuring pronounced organic shapes that reflect French Art Nouveau. After Eugène's death, Holbach continued the studio, gradually shifting the style toward more subdued, early Art Deco forms. Due to their pure handcrafted production and limited editions, Chanal's work is now considered rare and highly collectible within European decorative arts.
