Auguste Alexandre Mareschal’s Les faïences anciennes et modernes, leurs marques et décors is a second edition (revised and augmented) in French from 1874, comprising 91 pages with 61 colour illustrations and in publisher’s cloth with title page on the first cover, in reasonable condition.
Description from the seller
Second edition of this notable reference work by A. A. Mareschal, collector and antique dealer in Beauvais, author of the first book dedicated to faience with patriotic emblem motifs (1869).
Decorated with 61 color illustrations in the text.
Stored in its publisher’s cardboard binding with the title page printed on the front cover. Overall in good condition despite the spine being worn with losses at the ends. Covers browned, scuffed at the edges. The hinge is slightly weakened, with some scattered foxing without severity.
Good specimen.
The form in which we present here the results of our constant research seemed to us to be particularly suited, more than any other, to the study of Marques, most of which are merely contractions of a manufacturer's or decorator's name. It is not enough, in our opinion, to merely recall the color of these Marques or to recklessly multiply their number to make the task of classification easier.
Auguste Alexandre Mareschal
Old and modern faience, their marks and decorations. Second edition revised, corrected & expanded with a large number of new marks & decorations, drawn and chromolithographed from original pieces. French faience.
P., Eugène Delaroque, 1874.
Large octavo publisher's binding, XIII-1 pages, 91 pages.
